Hitachi offers 15,000 RPM, 450GB HDD<br />

Hitachi has announced the Ultrastar 15K450, which it claims will be the highest capacity 15,000 RPM HDD on the market.

The 450GB enterprise-class hard drive, which features Hitachi’s perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology, will be available to resellers this quarter in two versions – 3Gb/s Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) or 4Gb/s Fibre Channel (FC) interface.

Customers will have to weigh up whether the faster 5,000-RPM drives suit their needs better than 7,200-RPM drives, which are slower but can provide over double the storage capacity.

Hitachi’s Ultrastar 15K450 provides average seek times of just 3.3 milliseconds and fast rotational speeds reducing average latency time to two milliseconds. This provides faster and more efficient access to data.

The drives are designed for mission-critical applications that serve multiple users.
