The hidden costs of broadband

by David Allen

It would appear that there are millions of UK broadband customers who could be paying as much as two hundred pounds per year more than they expected.

This is due to the charges that some companies are using, which are hidden in the small print of contracts.

The main reasons for accumulating an additional charge is paying by cheque instead of setting up a direct debit, paying the bill late and the use of the provider’s telephone help line.

It has been estimated that there could be as many as three million customers in the UK whose broadband bill is higher than expected due to an unexpected charge.

Overall the cost of broadband is falling across the board, but other charges such as connection fees could be as much a seventeen times higher than customers in Europe have to pay.

At the same time the charge for not paying by direct debit varies from £1.50 up to £5 per month depending on the provider’s terms of service.
