Channel Four struggled last year

by David Allen

For the first time since 1994 Channel Four made a loss.

This could reflect the problems that hit the channel with Big Brother and the Phone-in troubles, which have also affected some of the other channels too. But the loss of revenue must have has an impact on results for 2007!

This loss has fast forwarded the question of public funding for the channel. There is talk that the channel could even go under if financial help is not forthcoming.

But with a loss of nearly eight million pounds for the year, it is clear that advertising is not bringing in enough money to cover the costs of programming.

The channel’s audience share has fallen by nearly nine per cent, and yet at the same time the channel’s digital TV offerings such as, Film 4, E4 and More 4 were up by a massive thirty five per cent.

While Channel Four is struggling, the digital channels posted a profit for the first time. The digital TV side of Channel Four is proving to be a success against the traditional terrestrial channel.
