Yahoo announces Y!Open

by Janet Harris

Yahoo! announced Y!Open, a strategy to turn the search engine into a developer platform, at the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco.

The initiative will open up Yahoo to third party developers and enhance the social aspects of the service for its members.

Yahoo will introduce the change gradually, with Yahoo Search being the first element to benefit from the changes.

‘SearchMonkey’, which is currently in beta, will allow site owners to customise search results related to their site with additional information.

Version 1.0 of Y!Open is expected to be available later this year, and the company hopes it will help it double operating cash flow from $1.9 billion to $3.7 over three years.
