Sharp ships wireless HDTV

Sharp has eliminated the need to have a bundle of television cables gathering dust behind a TV through an alliance with Amimon.

It has started selling its X-series LCD TVS in Japan, which feature Amimon’s wireless video technology as an optional extra, making the cables for games consoles and other electronic devices a thing of the past.

The high-bandwidth wireless technology is called WHDI (Wireless High Definition Interface).

TV inputs are routed through a separate box, which can be placed up to a hundred feet away from the TV.

Amimon’s WHDI technology transmits the HDTV signal wirelessly to the display from the tuner box, even through walls, using the same 5-GHz unlicensed band as IEEE 802.11a
