On 10 May 2008 it was Pangea Day. Millions of people gathered in more than 100 countries to watch the live programme of short films, inspirational talks and musical performances, beamed by Intelsat all over the world.
The event was co-ordinated live from six locations – Cairo, Kigali, London, Los Angeles, Mumbai, and Rio de Janeiro – and broadcast in seven languages.
The content was transmitted by Intelsat, the official satellite capacity sponsor, to thousands of movie theatres and registered “Friends of Pangea Day” watch parties bringing the people of the world together to promote understanding and tolerance through film.
The global event promoting understanding and compassion through film, featured 24 short films selected from an international competition.
There were also talks from CNN’s Christiane Amanpour and Queen Noor of Jordan, and live music from performers which included Bob Geldof, The Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart and Iranian rock band Hypernova.
During the event, Intelsat collected and transported programme feeds from three venues to the production centre in Los Angeles.
The live content was delivered to Intelsat’s teleports in Napa, California, Fuchstadt, Germany and Ellenwood, Georgia, for distribution through Intelsat’s video neighbourhoods serving North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, East Asia and Asia-Pacific.

Now that Pangea Day 2008 is over, the organisers will facilitate community-building activities around the world by connecting inspired viewers with organisations doing groundbreaking work to unite the world, rather than divide it
