BBC upheld complaints about soap

by David Allen

It was said to be the storyline of the Easter holidays, but many viewers were shocked as the soap Eastenders descended into a dark place.

The storyline centred on a couple, the “Brannings”, where the wife drugged her husband and with the aid of her lover, took the lifeless body to the forest where they intended to bury him alive in a coffin.

These scenes covered two episodes shown on Good Friday and Easter Monday, and both were shown before the watershed.

Because of the violence and use of drugs a series of complaints were made to the BBC complaints unit, simply because of the pre watershed timing.

The complaints unit have upheld the complaints, although they say there were only three.

The issues raised will be considered in any future storyline. However they did mention that even though there was the suggestion of violence, there was no explicit violence shown in the episodes.
