Digital switchover scheme is waste of money

by David Allen

MPs sitting on the Commons Public Accounts Committee have said that the government’s initial hand out to the BBC of £805 million was largely a waste of public money, in fact around £250 million has been wasted because of the lack of take up of the scheme’s services.

The BBC were given the £850 million in order to get some clarification and organisation for the switchover from the analogue signal to digital, yet there was no system in place to see if the taxpayer was getting value for money.

During the first half of 2007, around fifty per cent of all TVs sold were analogue, which will be no good as they are when the switchover takes place.

Whereas in France, they too are going through the digital process and they have banned the sale of analogue TVs.
