Ringtone websites misleading children

by David Allen

Following a thorough investigation by the European Commission, it has been found that nearly all of the websites that sell ringtones for mobile phones to teenagers and in some cases younger children, have been giving them misleading information and confusing charges for these products.

One of the things that they are doing is encouraging these youngsters to download a ringtone under special offers which may even be free, but actually they are signing up for a subscription to a long term contract.

In the UK, it is estimated that ninety per cent of these websites which are going to be investigated.

Many of these websites have come to the attention of the EU through complaints.

The business works on getting users to sign up for a ringtone, which may be free as part of a promotion which looks great and so simple to obtain by calling a number.

However, what they are signing up for is a daily ringtone at £1.50 over a long period.

It is hoped that the EU will put an end to this practice and make these businesses transparent.
