UK to get interactive crime maps

by David Allen

The decision by the Home Office to create an interactive series of maps, which would show immediately what sort of crimes had taken place at a certain location, would initially appear to be a good idea.

However as the proposal is to show up every reported crime on the Google style maps, it may have a detrimental effect on particular neighbourhoods, in some cases causing a ghetto or no go areas. This would totally affect the way that these areas are perceived.

This idea is still in the planning stages but should be available by the end of the year. It is not yet known to what extent the crimes will be shown, they will be detailed right down to street level or on an area basis.

Whatever the final decision is, this interactive map is going to cause some people problems, as insurance, house buyers, and businesses will be able to check out an area at the click of a mouse.

It is said that the government’s intention is to highlight the problem areas, so that the police have to do something positive about it. This would bring the police to account by the residents of the areas that come under their control.

  1. insurance companies already have this information - it’s why they do per post code pricing - so surely it is only fair for residents to see it too!
