BBC guilty of deceiving viewers

by David Allen

The media watchdog Ofcom has been showing the broadcasters the red card again.

This time the BBC have been under the microscope concerning the issues surrounding the phone ins on TV shows such as Comic Relief, Sports Relief and Children in Need, as well as several radio competitions too.

Ofcom have decided that the BBC staff responsible for the organising of these competitions fooled many viewers into calling in, despite the fact that the winners had already been picked, made up or even BBC staff posing as the winners of competitions.

The regulator found that BBC staff was still encouraging viewers and listeners to call in even though they stood no chance at all of winning.

Ofcom have fined the BBC £400,000, the largest fine that the BBC has ever been given showing the severity of the complaint.
