ABI Research forecasts Wi-Fi future

Predictions from research conducted forecasts that Wi-Fi will readily available in up to 99% of North American universities in 2013, mainly via 802.11n equipment, universities being the obvious market for this form of equipment.

ABI research focused on the type of equipment likely to be used, which as the above suggests, should be 802.11n, which currently has a very small share in the education market.

The main reason for this will be that most students’ laptops will be compatible with the ‘n’ format, and with such high usage, speed and capabilities of the 802.11n’s exceed the specification required for student halls.

Add to that the increase in usage of video over Wi-Fi, this again adds the need for a higher speed, which 802.11n can deal with.

Students will then be able to catch up on lessons they fell asleep in, as well as American Idol!

Educational outlets are taking the clever route by implementing a full 802.11n situation now, rather than purchasing the cheaper alternative, only to come back in one or two years time and replace the whole system, meaning the system will last for many years to come.

Of course on the other hand, some of the smaller, not so well funded educational outlets, may wait until the 802.11n standard has been accredited until they make the investment.
