Companies Don’t Understand Backup Solutions

Databarracks have announced the results of their annual Backup and Recovery survey, and the results show that 91% have total confidence in their backup solutions.

Unfortunately this confidence does not stand up well to scrutiny with 74% of respondents not utilising encryption or replication.

In addition they also do not make use of offsite backup facilities, but perhaps worse is the fact that 67% consider their data to be safe and sound, even though they do not make any attempt to test their restores, or keep or check backup logs.

Databarracks claims that these results show that the business community understands the need to secure their IT systems to maintain a flow of business and the need to recover their information should there be a data failure, but they do not understand what is needed to achieve these goals.

They say that companies have a blind faith in backup systems without fully comprehending the regulatory environment, or good business sense in ensuring fast and reliable recovery time objectives for IT systems.

They also say that the public is now far more aware of holes in security, and system failures are often seen as possible breaches that may cause customer information to be lost to criminal elements.

Even if this is not the situation, this is how the public often view system failures and they are getting less and less forgiving about delivery disruption, let alone the thought of their sensitive data being transported in an unencrypted and readable format.

The survey also reveals that 27% of companies’ data loss is caused by human error, 26% from hardware failure, and 19% from software failure.

This is a big switch around from 2006 when hardware failure was ranked at 61%, while human error only accounted for 2%.
