200 Mbps by 2012

by David Allen

Broadband connection speeds in the UK are taking on the same familiarity as the space race in the 1960s.

First we heard from BT, who is investing £1.5 billion into the network in order to bring up the connection speed for around ten million homes to anything up to 100 Mbps.

However, this will depend on whether the cable enters the building or the exchange.

Now we hear from Virgin Media, who are in the process of building up their own super fast network which has the capability of delivering speeds of up to 200 Mbps.

Clearly this has the potential to overtake BT’s network hands down.

There are pluses and minuses for each network, but the main problems could come when there are certain areas which have very high speed broadband and other more rural areas in the UK where broadband is still not available at all.
