The cleverly named Wave Entertainment Network, which is part of SeaMobile Enterprises, has announced an extensive IPTV platform, which is available to cruise ships.
This marks the first time ever that a multi-channel, interactive television system has been distributed to passenger cruise ships worldwide.
Wave’s concept is to attempt to deliver TV similar to what people may see at home.
This is a pretty tall order considering the range of languages involved, not to mention different cultures.
They have a line up of TV stations from several countries, in several languages, mostly European including DW from Germany, France 24, TV5 Monde from Brazil, RAI from Italy, ARD in German and TVE the Spanish international channel.
Most of their output is English language based as that is the most common second or first language for cruise customers.
It includes American and International networks that will be familiar to viewers from almost every country in the world: A&E Networks, CBS, Comcast, Cox Communications, Discovery Networks, Fox Cable, Fox News, NBC Universal, Twentieth Century Fox Studios and Viacom.
Cruise ships plying the Mediterranean can pick up channels in real time for local networks spread across Europe.
The line-up includes on-demand films and adult programming as well as live sports and “catch-up” for programming such as soap operas, as well as regular satellite broadcasts of kids’ TV and special interest networks.
Their parent company SeaMobile offers basic telephone ship to shore services via Maritime Telecommunications Network (MTN) as well as broadband internet on board the ships.
The companies also offer these services to military vessels and other sea born accommodations such as oil rigs and the merchant navy.
