Fake Internet Explorer 7 Links

by David Allen

Criminals are getting a bit smarter, or maybe it is just that internet users are wising up to the frauds that they are using, either way this means that frauds are becoming more convincing.

One of the latest attacks is the use of a fake IE7 logo and link.

This is appearing in emails, which are carrying the title “Internet Explorer 7”, and appear to be from the Features Office at Microsoft.

Placed within the email there is no text other than “Download the latest version!”

There is also a short paragraph at the bottom of the page that explains the email has come from Microsoft themselves.

However, if the link is clicked the user is taken to a fake browser.

This will try to download an “update.exe” file, which is around 136 Kb in size, and if successful it will download malware.

Anyone looking to move to IE7 should go to the Microsoft site only, to be on the safe side.
