Olympic wins for UK ISPs

by David Allen

As the Olympic hopefuls begin to pick up medals of various colours over in Beijing, the ISPs here in the UK are celebrating too, with huge amounts of traffic being generated by people watching the events as they happen over the internet.

It all started at Friday afternoon’s opening ceremony.

Although this was late evening in Beijing, in the UK it was 1 pm, when many people are at work or possibly at lunch.

Whatever the situation, the internet has been the favourite source for accessing the Olympics for a lot of people.

Plusnet are claiming a 500% increase in streaming traffic, if compared to the normal amounts of traffic for that time of day.

However, the main users of this traffic appear to be business users.

This indicates that there are a lot of employees taking a quick look at what is going on through the BBC website.
