HD on Freeview plans by ITV and C4

by David Allen

ITV and Channel Four have applied to run HD services on the Freeview service, although this will not happen quickly as the current capacity on Freeview cannot allow for any additional services.

However, there are plans by the regulator Ofcom for the multiplex B to be reconfigured.

This could happen gradually as the analogue signals are switched off around the country, or in one big pulse when the entire country turns digital.

The BBC has already been given space for multiplex B and will start transmitting as early as next year, but for ITV, Channel Four and to a lesser extent Five, the outcome is less than straight forward as it seems that they have different requirements and Five has not even applied for any extra space yet!
