The government is being accused of not doing enough to work within the framework of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive, which has been put into place to prevent the tons of computer waste being dumped on the shores of third world countries, like Ghana in Africa.
The waste has a value to these poor people, because computers do contain some precious, semi precious and other metals, all of which have a value. However, once these metals have been removed what’s left is more waste like plastics and other materials.
The problem that is being faced in the UK is the fact that agencies are having their budgets cut and therefore are unable to keep up with all of these directives and even when they do find businesses that are flouting the regulations on waste, there is little that can be done about it.
