66% of Companies Worried About Data Leakage

Infosecurity Europe has commissioned new research that looks into various aspects of security problems that are facing many companies.

The number one concern of the respondents was data leakage, with 69% citing this as their biggest worry.

At number two in the security worries league table is how to keep collaborative and mobile working secure, with 58% considering that to be their most pressing security problem.

Another pressing concern was the implementation of security that supports more cost efficient IT infrastructure (48%) and coming in at number four was finding ID and access management that works (43%).

The top 10 IT security worries were

How to prevent data leakage from within an organisation 69%
How to secure remote, mobile and collaborative working 58%
Governance risk compliance – get security right to ensure compliance 56%
Implementing security that supports more cost efficient IT infrastructure 48%
ID and access management that works 43%
Building security that is future proof 42%
How to make IT architectures and strategies more secure 39%
How can security help IT more agile and aligned with future business needs and growth 31%
Security in new or emerging markets where infrastructure/networks are hostile 25%
Assuring common security standards with third parties, customers, suppliers and outsourced activities 25%

All these figures seem to indicate that those involved are well aware of the security issues that potentially threaten their particular IT structure and are equally aware of the potential problems that they could face if something were to go wrong.

But according to Mike Barwise these companies are looking for some kind of “cure all” or as he put it “magic bullet” that will make all these potential problems disappear.

Future proofing of security for example, does not appear to rank very high on the list of concerns of IT managers

Barwise considers that although the knowledge of the threats is there, the business commitment to spend the cash to avoid the potential time bombs is not very high, and that the “business/technical divide is as great as ever, and remains the limiting factor in corporate information security.”
