Top hospitals may claim over NPfIT

by David Allen

Some of the most famous hospitals in medical history are planning the next stage of how to proceed with their claims that the National Programme for IT (NPfIT), valued at £12.7 billion, has left their staff struggling with constant bugs and downtime ever since the system went live in June of this year.

The hospitals, which include Bart’s and the Royal Free, were the first to go live with the care records service which is where fifty million patient records will be held on one system and can be available to any GP, health centre or hospital in order to aid to the smooth running of treatments and operations.

However, there have been times when appointments and even operations have been missed due to the system.

In 2003 BT won the contract, worth £993 million, to build the care records service in London, but BT insist that there has been no indication that the service has been under stress or that there have been any claims made about BT.
