Why so much spam?

by David Allen

‘Why is there so much spam?’ is a question which has probably been asked millions of times by internet users and another question asked is ‘why me?’

Well the first question is related to the second, as recent research has found that the amount of spam received in the inbox is directly related to the first letter of the recipient’s email address.

Richard Clayton, a computer scientist at Cambridge University, has been analysing spam or junk mail.

In fact he studied around five hundred million messages to find the common denominators.

The bad news is anyone who has an email address that begins with A, M, S, R or P is going to be getting around forty per cent more junk mail than email addresses that begin with other letters.

Just out of interest, those email addresses that receive the least amount of junk mail begin with the letters, Q, Y and Z!
