Dell jumps netbook bandwagon
by David Allen
Dell today became the latest computer supplier to unveil a netbook.
Never one to miss out on making money, Dell has joined the latest trend of producing small, low-priced, lightweight, carry anywhere, Wi-Fi connected laptops known as netbooks.
The Inspiron Mini 9.0 is a low-priced micro-laptop priced £299 and measuring in at two-thirds the size of Dell’s range of fully-featured laptops.
Dell says the device is ‘small’ and ‘easy-to-carry’, weighing in at just over 1kg.
Features include 1.6GHz of processing power, an 8.9-inch ‘glossy’ LED screen, sealed keyboard, 16GB solid state disc drive, large keypad, Wi-Fi connectivity, and Windows XP operating system.
Optional extra-cost features include a built-in webcam and Bluetooth connectivity.
An Ubuntu Linux version of the Mini 9.0 is expected to be released shortly priced £269 including VAT and delivery.
In other Dell news, CEO Michael Dell has admitted that the company is considering making a device to compete with the iPhone.
Speaking at the Citi Technology Conference in New York, he said that Dell plans to enter the small screen devices market, but not in the near future.
