According to a new report from ABI Research, the market for Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) will grow annually by 167% over the next five years.
ABI’s report, ‘Short-Range Wireless Technologies in Mobile Internet Devices’, also highlights Bluetooth as a key technology in MIDs.
While all MIDs will come with Wi-Fi as standard, Bluetooth is expected to reach a 95% penetration rate by the end of this year.
Demand for Bluetooth will be driven by consumers’ preference for an all-in-one device that eliminates the need to carry a mobile phone as well.
Bluetooth will allow MID users to utilize the device’s voice capabilities via a headset.
Improvements in Bluetooth technology will also provide enhanced connectivity options.
Bluetooth over 802.11, or AMP (Alternate MAC PHY) software will allow an MID’s Bluetooth circuits to work together with a faster Wi-Fi connection in order to transfer large amounts of data.
Another new technology, ultra-wideband (UWB) should be available by 2011, promising a more powerful version of Bluetooth.
‘Short-Range Wireless Technologies in Mobile Internet Devices’ is part of the Short-Range Wireless Research Service provided by ABI Research.
