UK Fibre Broadband to cost £29 billion

by David Allen

Finally there has been a price put on the cost of providing a decent fibre based broadband service to every home in the UK, and it could be as high as £29 billion according to a report out by the government’s broadband advisory group.

However, there is another option, which would at first appear to be a better option, at only just over £5 billion.

This would mean that the fibre broadband would be installed up to the street boxes and not the individual homes, but this option would mean a cut in broadband speed.

The second option may seem to be the way to go initially, and with speeds estimated at between 30 Mbps and 100 Mbps, this would be perfectly acceptable to most internet users.

However, the cable to home option would provide a broadband speed of 1 Gbps.

Whatever option or options the industry decides to go with, will inevitably have a price tag attached.

Until these prices are discussed too, maybe it is too early to decide how broadband is delivered.
