Carrier-class Ethernet over SONET/SDH networks

Israel-based infrastructure provider, ECI Telecom, is partnering with Ethernet chipset provider Vitesse, allowing ECI to provide Carrier-class Ethernet over existing SONET/SDH networks.

ECI will use chipsets made by the California-based company to power its XDM and Broadgate multi-service Ethernet platforms.

ECI, which provides infrastructure equipment to telecoms carriers, will use Vitesse’s Carrier Ethernet chipset to supply carriers with an advanced quality end-to-end Ethernet service.

Vitesse Carrier Ethernet comprises 10 Gigabit Ethernet PHYs, multi-channel Media Access Controllers (MACs), Ethernet-over-SONET (EoS) Mappers, and multi-channel Crosspoint Switches.

Vitesse’s chipset – which incorporates high-speed switching components and a high performance physical layer – allows ECI to provide carriers with an Ethernet network that has both access aggregation and metro core network applications.

It is the only total solution available that allows for Carrier-class Ethernet over existing SONET/SDH infrastructure.

All Ethernet-based applications will be supported, including triple-play, Ethernet-based 3G Mobile aggregation, Ethernet-leased line services, and business services.

Alon Moshes, vice president of marketing at ECI, said Vitesse’s chipset allows his company to deliver an ‘industry leading performance’ in packet optical transport.

He added that the advanced capabilities of Vitesse’s products allow ECI to offer flexible solutions to the ever-changing demands of network providers.

Tony Conoscenti, vice president of product marketing at Vitesse, said that his company continues to make the investments necessary to offer its customers ‘leading edge’ solutions.
