For many internet users, the police getting involved in the secret trials of target advertising system Phorm, by internet service provider BT, would raise hopes of finally getting to the bottom of the whole saga.
However, it seems that both Phorm and BT have been given the green light, as the police close the case.
This is not going to go down well with the anti privacy campaigners, who believe that the way BT went about trialing the system on their customers in secret was wrong.
Nevertheless, it was only last week that the government gave BT the green light to proceed with Phorm and so it was probably to be expected that the police investigation would result in no charges.
There is only one hope left for the opponents of Phorm and indeed those interested in privacy and data protection; the EU commission is yet to make its decision as to whether Phorm is in breach of the European Data Protection Laws.
