BT to set own wholesale prices

by David Allen

In order to speed up the necessary work to change the BT network over to fibre optic, it seems that Ofcom have given BT a licence to print money, by allowing them to charge whatever they want to the wholesale customers.

At the same time Ofcom are encouraging other providers to collaborate with each other in order to get the best out of their services too, as this would mean that they could spread the cost of development.

In the meantime Ofcom are looking for feedback on the following proposals that cover five broad areas:

    Developing standards for wholesale communications products and services;
    Pricing freedom for companies, in areas where there is effective competition;
    Competition based on access to existing Infrastructure;
    Effective transition arrangements while network operators build fibre networks;
    Ofcom’s next steps – how it will work with the government and the European Commission on next generation networks.
