UK Femtocell technology deployed in Japan

by David Allen

The Japanese provider Softbank is launching the first femtocell network in Japan, with the help of UK firm Ubiquisys and NEC.

NEC and Ubiquisys are long term partners in this type of technology and this deal with the Japanese provider Softbank is a huge stepping stone to the launch of a network.

There is a femtocell service in place already by other networks, but this only caters for voice.

This new network is going to be the first femtocell network that will use 3G technologies and will enable the use of mobile broadband too, opening up a huge market place.

A femtocell network operates by using the customer’s broadband service to provide a clear mobile signal throughout the building, but now the addition of 3G makes this even more interesting.
