EU wants broadband for all

Now the European Commission (EC) is setting up a debate to find out how to bring broadband to every household within the European community by 2010.

It is currently estimated that around seven per cent of the European population do not have access to the Internet and this figure jumps up to thirty per cent in some rural areas.

These figures are actually a true representation of the internet access by each member state.

This is because some states like Denmark, Belgium and Luxembourg all show a hundred per cent internet coverage, while Germany and Italy have an internet coverage of eighty eight per cent and eight two per cent respectively.

However, for poorer regions, access to the internet can make a lot of difference to the people’s way of life and should be available to those who want it.
