iPlayer goes mobile

Janet Harris

Nokia launches its new flagship mobile handset, the N96, today, and as well as impressive photo, gaming and video functionality, users can also run the BBC’s iPlayer through an embedded application.

This allows them to download BBC content for a week.

Nokia also plans to roll out the iPlayer service to its N78, N95 and N96 handsets.

It remains to be seen whether mobile operators will wholeheartedly embrace the iPlayer.

The catch up TV service was a great success when it launched on fixed-line networks, but led to a significant increase in the amount of data being downloaded and clogging up the network.

Its impact on mobile networks is likely to be just as significant.
