BT to start trials of fibre to cabinet

by David Allen

The local access network business within BT, Openreach, are announcing that they are about to start trials of their fibre to the cabinet broadband in 2009.

The first location for these trials is going to be at the Foxhall BT exchange that covers the Kesgrave area in Ipswich. This will take place in early 2009.

Then by the summer of 2009, Openreach intends to roll out the fibre to exchanges in Muswell Hill in London and Whitchurch in South Glamorgan.

These exchanges cover around thirty thousand households and business premises.

In theory, this will mean that internet users in these areas will be able to connect to the broadband network at speeds approaching 40 Mbps, depending on how close they are from the exchange.
