DIRECTV Use Tandberg For US Local HD Broadcasting
by Alan Harten

The existing relationship between Tandberg and DIRECTV, based on the 2005 agreement for the use of Tandberg’s MPEG-4 AVC HD platform that made DIRECTV America’s first direct-to-home (DTH) satellite provider with HD capabilities, has been increased as DIRECTV have now signed up for the use of Tandberg’s brand new MPEG-4 AVC HD encoding solution.
The new solution is aimed at allowing Direct to expand further into local HD channels.
Direct operate in over 100 US markets, which means they are capable of reaching over 80% of the vast and lucrative American market.
This new agreement means that they will now be capable of carrying local HD broadcasting from over 120 US cities, adding more viewers and possibly taking them to near 90% of the potential national market.
The new solution includes EN8095 encoders with IP statistical multiplexing, 8VSB input and a far greater bandwidth capacity.
This will be used for the capturing of the terrestrial channels ready for instant re-broadcast via their system.
