The main terrestrial channels of ITV, Channel Four and the BBC, are to launch HD versions of their channels on Freeview starting next year, according to the media regulator Ofcom.
This is a good move for Freeview because despite the HD versions of these channels being available on Sky, Virgin Media and Freesat, through these services the channels are not available for free as they come part of a package.
Now that these channels will be available on Freesat this will make them the only really free access to HD viewing of the main terrestrial channels.
However despite the initial release time of 2009, this would only take place as and when the digital signal is turned off.
The next signal switch off is Granada in 2009, but for London and the other southern areas this will not happen until 2012, so there will still be some time before these HD channels are available.
