Joint Venture to Tackle Software Vulnerabilities

According to information issued by the National Institute for Standards & Technology, NIST, up to 92% of all network security vulnerabilities are traced back to software applications.

This coupled with the growing use of enterprise outsourcing of application development can be the key to serious security problems.

Other studies have found that approximately 90% of companies outsource at least 50% of their code development.

The string of well-publicised breaches in data security such as the one at Hannaford Brothers illustrates the possible implications of inadequate software application security.

Wipro Technologies and Fortify Software Inc have jointly announced the imminent creation of a combined centre with the purpose of assessing and assuring the security of client applications.

The new Wipro Software Assurance Centre (SAC) will make use of Fortify’s 360 technology and will use Wipro’s Indian as well as regional facilities.

According to the two companies, nearly all vulnerability management is focused on PCs, servers and network devices.

They say that this is no longer an adequate solution and that they will be making focused efforts on large-enterprise applications, databases, externally facing Web applications and internally developed applications.

The aim of the new centre will be to help organisations search for and detect threats and then mitigate them before damage occurs.

They claim that this will be the most scalable as well as the most cost-effective way for businesses to deal with the ever changing threats caused by software vulnerabilities.
