Sky in trouble over promotions

by David Allen

Sky has once again fallen foul of the advertising rules as laid out by the telecom regulator Ofcom.

This follows the now long running feud between Sky and Virgin Media. Sky withdrew its services from Virgin Media leaving their customers without Sky One, Sky News and Sky Sports.

Then Sky produced four promotions, which were shown on Sky and Virgin Media. These were in slots that would have normally been for previews of forthcoming programmes whereas in fact, the wording of the promotions were not to Virgin Media’s liking.

The promotions appeared to concentrate on the customers of Virgin Media losing access to Sky with words like “Only available on Sky”, but instead of encouraging Virgin Media’s customers to jump ship, it just annoyed some of them who complained to Ofcom, along with Virgin Media.

The conclusion of Ofcom was that three out of the four promotions were in breach of the television code.
