Public access computers in the county of Staffordshire are going to be replaced with new and more eco friendly systems in a trail that could roll out throughout the UK.
The computers being replaced will be those in libraries that are used by thousands of people.
There are around six hundred computers installed in libraries around the country that allow access to the internet, email and even word processing facilities to anyone who holds a current library card.
At the moment the current stock of computers date back to around 2000/01, which was when internet access first became available in libraries, but since then there has been little or no investment in this public access network.
The council is estimating that by introducing new computers, it will in fact save around £10,000 per year in electricity alone.
