Slowly but surely IT companies are finding that other companies they wish to do business with, want to know their green credentials before entering into agreements.
The computer world is not known for its environmentally friendly credentials but many other UK companies are moving towards a more carbon neutral way of doing business.
Part of this greener business model is to know how polluting the people that you give business to are, and many IT companies are finding themselves lacking in this department and thus are not even being considered for some potentially lucrative jobs.
This lack of green credentials, such as ISO 14001 certification, is causing not only potential customers but also potential partners and even suppliers to avoid certain IT companies.
A suggestion from one company, Dimension Data, is to implement unified communications (UC) to help reduce carbon footprint.
Some companies are already moving towards UC and, according to statistics by Dimension Data, these companies are finding that they are benefiting from a reduction in carbon emissions of somewhere around 14.5%.
Just under half of the companies they contacted (47%) believe that a reduction in their carbon footprint had been a side-effect result of the use of UC.
Many companies (57%) found that UC adoption had a dramatic effect on reducing travel costs by making use of conferencing.
Some companies were concentrating, not surprisingly at the moment, on cost saving rather than going green. UC gives them the opportunity to do both at the same time.
Not flying around the world for in-person meetings, and not sitting for hours in motorway traffic jams is a very effective way of reducing the company’s carbon footprint, making use of in office conferencing will have that effect.
The study also found that around 22% of British businesses make use of Video-conferencing and web collaboration, which was second only to mobile e-mail in the arena of new technology deployments at the companies questioned.
