In a new initiative from Microsoft, start up companies can get their hands on some free software.

In this deal, start-ups will be eligible for the BizSpark scheme, which includes production licences for application hosting, and management servers including Windows Server, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server, BizTalk Server and Systems Centre.

BizSpark is a worldwide initiative and will be available to businesses that have been running for less than three years and make less than £700,000 in revenue.

The eligibility details are:

    actively engaged in development of a software-based product or service that will form a core piece of its current or intended business;
    privately held;
    in business for less than 3 years;
    earning less than US $1 million in annual revenue.

On the face of it, this looks to be a great idea. Microsoft say that they looking to develop future partners, and access for a start up to the Microsoft Developer Network has to be a good deal.
