BBC iPlayer to go international

November 10, 2008

There is such a thing as being too successful and that could be applied to the BBC iPlayer, which has seen huge growth since its introduction last Christmas.

This just goes to show that the investment that the BBC has been making in online entertainment is fully justified, especially as there have been almost two hundred and fifty million pieces of content used since the official launch.

The success of the iPlayer has prompted a call for it to go international; this would put BBC content in front of a much wider audience and therefore create further opportunities for the BBC to expand on a global scale.

It is still early days and the actual demographics are not yet known, but by taking an average Eastenders episode, that will get around eighteen million viewers, while on the iPlayer the figure is more like half a million.
