Could BT drop next gen?

Could the shareholders of BT decide the future of UK broadband?

This is one theory that is being spread around at the moment, despite the announcement sometime ago that BT would be investing £1.5 billion in the rolling out of a fibre optic network.

But have the recent financial problems put an end to this essential investment in the UK which, if it did not go ahead, would spell danger for many internet based businesses, not to mention disappointing millions of internet users?

The internet is moving forward fast and if the network is unable to stay in touch, then services like the bandwidth eating iPlayer from the BBC and others will just continue to put pressure on the internet service providers.

With Ofcom giving the go ahead for BT, it seems that there is little to stop them from deploying the next generation of super fast broadband services, yet could it be the shareholders in BT who really do have the final say in whether or not the UK gets next gen broadband.
