Government propose ISP name and shame list

by David Allen

The government are planning to publish a league table of internet service providers, but this table, and we know how this government likes a league table, will be for naming and shaming purposes.

Those ISP’s which fail to remove offensive material will be featured on the table.

This comes from the Culture Minister, Barbara Follett, with a helping hand from her opposition counterpart, Ed Vaizey.

The plan is that if, after a complaint, the ISP does not remove violent or even sexually explicit content from web sites, it will be placed on the list and shamed into doing about it.

It goes further than that, she wants the chaos to be taken out of the internet and order restored.

A lot of work needs to be done in order to achieve an internet that is safe for children.

There is also talk of an ID card to be used over the internet, but how this is going to work without an original image etc is anyone’s guess.

The government seems to want children to be scared of the internet, rather than wanting them to be able to use it to produce better work for school.
