Microsoft highlights Azure at shareholder meeting

by Janet Harris

Microsoft Corporation held its Annual Shareholder Meeting today and CEO Steve Ballmer said that Azure and the Azure Services Platform will play a key role in Microsoft’s future.

Azure is a cloud-based operating system, which means it runs on Microsoft’s own data centre, rather than in-house servers.

Although hosting applications on the internet isn’t a new idea, Azure will make it easier for developers to create applications.

Azure will also be able to access virtual servers at times of high demand, and will provide database and document storage.

Companies will benefit as they won’t need to invest in hardware and management, and will pay only for the computing power they actually use.

Microsoft also outlined its strategy for continued growth in the face of the difficult economic environment at the meeting.
