US-based MobiTV, the first ever company to broadcast live TV direct to mobile phones, has reached the five million subscriber milestone – with one million new subscribers in the last five months.
The service is now available on over 350 handsets across 20 mobile networks including AT&T, Alltel and Sprint.
CEO Charlie Nooney said the rapid increase in subscribers is due to the company’s passion for delivering an ‘exceptional experience’ to its customers.
America’s current political landscape also helped.
This year’s US presidential elections created a rush of access to MobiTV, with subscribers tuning into news channels for the latest election updates.
Paul Scanlon, MobiTV’s president and co-founder, said average daily viewing figures increased 111% during the third presidential debate, and 373% on election day.
“Those numbers not only indicate exciting times for US politics, but for mobile television as well,” Scanlon said.
MobiTV’s service offers access to prime time shows on all major US TV networks, including CNBC, MSNBC, Animal Planet, USA Network, Bloomberg Television, Access Hollywood, The Weather Channel, and The History Channel.
