It would appear that laptop makers are intent on moving full steam ahead to produce their machines with integrated 3G broadband modems.
This means that the USB dongle is no longer needed as the SIM card is placed directly into the machine in a similar way that they are with mobile phones; but do customers want that?
In a recent report by Disruptive Analysis, it was found that eventually embedded mobile broadband will overtake the traditional dongle for accessing the internet while on the move, but this is not likely to happen anytime before 2014.
In the meantime there will be a race between the two modems.
In reality the embedded version is better for the providers, because they only have to hand over a SIM card.
However, for the mobile broadband users it is a different matter because a dongle offers more portability.
In addition, it can be switched between machines much more easily.
