Net neutrality is the principle that all web traffic is treated as equal, no matter what alliances internet service providers have, but with the launch of Virgin Media’s super fast broadband service could they also be looking to tackle the sticky subject of net neutrality once and for all.
This is because at some point during next year they will be looking to revise their policies on broadband with the view to blocking torrent sites and other P2P outlets.
Virgin Media could even go as far as attempting to charge content providers to have their material delivered through the Virgin Media network. This takes on the way that cable and satellite broadcasters charge other channels to broadcast on their service.
The problem that Virgin Media will have is that customers signing up at £51 per month are not likely to want a restricted service.

That first paragraph is very poorly worded.
How stupid! I’m with Virgin Media currently and if they try to attempt anything like this then i’ll be shifting ISP for sure. I pay for the internet, not a selection of the internet “allowed” by VM.
I rely on torrent sites for my work as it’s the fastest way to get hold of Linux distros and virtualmachine images, certain “chunky” software that official sites distribue via torrent sites etc. (I’m tech journalist for a magazine)
No doubt virgin will start to introduce a “cap” as well further stunting the growth of the internet.
What a load of BS! Leave it out Virgin you nosey ****s I hate you!
If Virgin go ahead with this madness I *will* be removing their Broadband, TV package and telephone services from my home and going back to British Telecom and another ISP. Not all Torrents are rip-off illegal as Joey already mentioned. Leave the Internet alone Virgin! Or suffer a huge loss in customer numbers!
I left Virgin 3 months ago partly after hearing that this was in the pipeline and partly after broken promises for the last 2 years that 10mbit broadband would be the standard for my area on my package. Instead I was paying £25 a month for a 4mbit line. Now I pay £10 a month for double the speed through Sky broadband (and I’m actually getting 8mbit though they claim 16 is possible). Virgin claim 10mbit IS now available in my city but I don’t believe it as my neighbours can’t get it.
I think they’ll play it thusly:
Premium expensive package – all access to everything, and they’ll pay off the content masters hassling them.
Basic package – restricted download/speed and content.
different tinterwebs per wealth.
To charge providers to send on their network, is exactly the same as paying Royal Mail to send a letter, then when the other person gets it, they have to pay for it again.
The only reason we are currently with virgin is because the service is good and there are no caps or quotas. Basically no-nonsense service.
For a percent of people, they want fast internet to download from torrent sites. Banning these would make virgin less attractive to current and possible customers!
Virgin can eat the sweetcorn outa my s**t,,,because thats all i will give them if they muck about with the net just to gain money!
like branson the dope smoker cares more about morals then money!
NOT.
It has long been my opinion that Branson looks like some Satans Disciple and now and again he does something, or says something, to embed that opinion even deeper in my mind. He seems to have, in my opinion, a voracious appetite for power and money such as I imagine Satan would have. Maybe it’s just me. What do you think?
how dumb is virgin do they want to lose customers ? i pay use full internet access not what virgin tells to use…what they going to banned next ?…soon all your’ll be able to do is use the net for is emails only..i didnt know this was run by Adolf Branson…if they intend on doing this i shall be giving Adolfin aka Virgin the boot thats for sure.
Virgin must be off their heads, has everyone forgotten how Branston started? A perfect recipe for disaster Virgin.
People really need to be educated about what net neutrality means for them before it is already too late. I’m sure if average Joe understood that they want to charge him X amount to be able to access certain parts of the internet he would tell them where to shove it.
I certainly will be doing! All packets were created equal, it is not the ISPs right to commercialize our data. I just hope and pray that people will not be oblivious to this garbage and leave Virgin in droves. It’s the only way to prevent other ISPs from thinking they can do the same.
Virgin have signed their own death certificate, what a ridiculously stupid move.
Boycott all Virgin services and products! We must send a message to Virgin and any other service provider that wants to do away with the Internet as we know it.
boycott
How stupid are Virgin
The ony people who would possibly want and pay 50 quid for a 50mb connection are p2p users and I dont just mean the pirate bay boys.
So in announcing this they have in effect said they are introducing a service that is of no use to it’s potential buyers. Tonight I have downloaded ubuntu and four sets of windows updates. Totally legitimate useage .. I was throttled. last night I watched Iplayer a service they actualy provide on thier tv package .. Three programs and I was throttled again.
Virgin are a bunch of wasters as commented by Huxley, you get throttled if you download too much (but it is stated in there AUP, that they will) but using ADSL you are throttled all the time if you break the magical 300meg/byte per hour rule as in 1 gig a day (you get throttled no worries)
Go for it Virgin and watch your client base dissapear! you cant handle “up to 8 meg” downloads so how the f*** are you going to cope with 50meg?
I’m with virgin for the time being. Yes I’ll be moing when the contract is up. Their Customer service is s**t. They don’t give a f*** for exsisting customers and are only out to gain new customers with offers while ripping off those who go into their 2nd year with them.
Virgin Will Sure Lose Alot Of Customers, People Love Using Torrent Sites It Satisfies Them And Helps Them In Different Ways At The End Of The Day Its Really Sharing Of Information And Other Stuff If They Did I Will Switch My ISP Straight Away
