Regulator speaks out on hidden charges

by David Allen

The communications regulator, Ofcom, has further clarified the situation regarding hidden charges, which it feels is causing big problems for customers of broadband, telecom, digital TV and mobile communications providers.

To put more pressure on these providers, Ofcom has given them until April to make these hidden charges much clearer to customers.

Hidden charges can include all manner of fees, sometimes for services that some customers have no idea they are being charged for.

Additional fees and charges on phone, digital TV and internet services can include:

    Non-direct-debit surcharges (these may apply if you pay your phone, broadband or TV bill by cash or cheque, rather than by direct debit);
    Extra charges for receiving an itemised or paper bill;
    Late or non-payment fees;
    Early cancellation fees for leaving a provider before the end of the initial term of a phone, broadband or TV contract.
