Social networking helps teens to express themselves

by David Allen

Many Internet users of a certain age probably see teenagers’ fascination with social networking as a waste of time, which serves little purpose other than for posting photos and sharing favourite pieces of music.

Yet recent research by a charity that provides support for young people, Young Minds, has found that time spent online and in particular on social networking sites such as Facebook and Bebo, is actually time well spent.

Apparently social networking sites offer teenagers a useful outlet for concerns over issues such as mental health, emotional well being and other personal matters.

These problems may not have come to light without social networking, which shows that these sites are a valuable tool for the teenager.
