Yahoo cuts data retention period

The big three in the search engine world currently keep search data for different lengths of time, and there are calls for them all to change their policies to zero retention during 2009.

However, as information is key to their success, is this likely to happen?

Yahoo has made a bold move which shows that maybe it could be on the cards one day.

The company has announced that it will be changing its storage retention policy from keeping data for thirteen months, to keeping it for just three months.

Microsoft is believed to consider six months as a fair time period, but has yet to make any poistive moves, while Google is fixed at a nine month limit on data storage.

Under new EU recommendations, six months is the recommended maximum time to store data, and this limit has been endorsed by all twenty seven states.
