Live darts getting to the point

by David Allen

Showing live sports has always been Sky Sports’ core activity, but at the recent World Darts Championships, held at the Alexandra Palace in London, the company was in the firing zone over the behaviour of the audience.

It seems that the event sponsor, Ladbrokes, left blank cards around the audience areas, on which fans wrote rude and personal messages, and held them up to the cameras.

Being live TV, there was little that could be done by the Sky Sports producers to prevent this.

They had to quickly switch cameras and hope that there was no offensive card in clear view of the shot.

Apparently, on HD televisions, the messages are displayed much more clearly than on standard TV.
